14 Jun 2022 – A record number of teams and club members from Auckland Curling Club attended the Men’s and Women’s Open Nationals 2022 at Naesby last weekend. Eleanor Adviento and Jo Olszewski led teams in the Open Women’s competition while men’s teams led by Dean Fotti and Benjamin Frew participated in the Open Men’s competition, with other Auckland members such as Brett Sargon and Peter de Boer playing in other teams.
After a slow start, the team led by Eleanor won through to the final of the Women’s competition, pushing the Current NZ Women’s team into a 7th end but having to settle for the silver medal. On the men’s side, Benjamin’s team made it to the semi-finals, losing to the team led by Peter de Boer, while on the other side of the draw, Brett’s team went down to Sean Becker’s team in a very tight match. Ultimately the locals shone through with Sean Becker’s team narrowly beating Peter de Boer’s team 6-4 in the final.
The comp was played in great spirit and Auckland Curling showed the depth that is developing in the club. As a final acknowledgment to the club, Brett Sargon was joint winner of the Wendy Becker Trophy for Sportsmanship with Holly Thompson.
